Henderson Co. High School Class of 1958

Senior Class Chronicles

High school at last!!! So thought 214 green freshmen on September 3, 1954 – the first day of school. Alas! Little did we know of the innumerable hardships that we would be called upon to surpass during the next four years. Joyously we attacked the mountains of homework stacked upon us by hard-hearted teachers.

Beth Jones and Jo Carolyn Rayburn proved the resourcefulness of freshmen by winning first and second places in the "What America Means to Me" contest. Leaders of this most uninformed class were Jackie Caudill, president; Louise Brelsford, Secretary; and Ann Bishop, treasurer.

Judy Overfield was elected Miss Christmas Seal by the good citizens of Henderson and Henderson County. Chosen top guy and gal were Jack Sandefur and Beth Jones, Mr. and Miss Freshman. Chief noisemakers were cheerleaders Betty Ann Carter, Joretta Duncan, and Beth Jones.

Then came our sophomore year. To get things rolling, we elected Jackie Caudill, president, again. Betty Ann Carter, Joretta Duncan, and Beth Jones were re-elected cheerleaders.

Our boys, being anxious to show their vim, vigor, and vitality went out for every type of athletics offered. Our first football team was formed that year. Representing our class on the squad were Dexter Lewis, Louie Don Adams, Glenn Kellen, Paul Drury, Jackie McCauley. Dexter Lewis and Jack Sandefur were active in the hardwood sport, basketball. Jackie Caudill was the only member of the "silly sophs" who was brave enough to venture out for track.

Dexter Lewis, Jackie McCauley, Dale Sights, and Jackie Caudill were always "in there battlin’" for our fighting Colonels’ baseball team. Judy Overfield was chosen F. F. A. Sweetheart and reigned at the Father and Son Banquet. Dexter Lewis and Shirley Pritchett were our Mr. and Miss Sophomore, who, incidentally are "Mr. and Mrs." now. The sophomore class experienced a tragedy when Charles Olden Delacy was killed in an accident.

Jolly juniors we became. Upperclassmen!! No longer could we be referred to as "mere underclassmen." We had arrived! Jackie Caudill was again elected president with Roscoe Doriott assisting as vice-president; Charles Litton, secretary; Judy Overfield, treasurer; and Joretta Duncan, reporter. Jimmy Lee Nasbitt represented the junior class as basketball queen attendant. Cheerleaders chosen from this boisterous group were Joretta Duncan, Pat Bentley, and Beth Jones.

The boys of the school got a chance to show off their abilities as track stars Sadie Hawkins day when all the girls "got their man."

The climaxing event in our junior activities was the junior-senior barbecue given by the juniors in honor of the seniors.

During the summer of our junior year we lost a much-loved student, Betty McKinney.

At last! Our senior year, often dreamed about and now a reality; the last year we would be able to call ourselves high schoolers! Ah! What wonderful times we shared together. For this most important year, we must choose our leaders wisely. President? Jackie Caudill! Who else? Louie Don Adams was chosen to assist him as vide-president with Lindy Butler as secretary; Linda Sullivan, treasurer; and Judy Harwood, reporter. Pat Bentley, Joretta Duncan and Beth Jones carried on as varsity cheerleaders.

Seniors! Wisdom at its highest peak! But it took wisdom to attain our foremost achievement. We are the first class to go four full years at County High---all of our high school days. We aren’t stepchildren of other schools scattered over the county. We are from County High and we’re proud of it!!
